Paterson lost a hero in the passing of Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. The Paterson Firefighters Association gives our deepest condolences to his wife Elsie, their children and extended family, friends and associates. We thank Congressman Pascrell for his 87 years of life, and celebrate his lifelong dedication to serving the people of New Jersey.
Born in Paterson, NJ Bill Pascrell's entire life in service of others, and making an impact on people's lives. He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserves. He taught twelve years as a school teacher before becoming a Professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Not long after that he joined the Paterson Board of Education, and from there his political life in public service began. Pascrell had served as District 35 Assemblyman.
He served two terms as Mayor of the City of Paterson, until he resigned after he won his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He won his first Congressional election with 51% of the vote, and won reelection seven more times with at least 62% of the vote each time.
The Congressman always gave his all for the State of New Jersey, the Districts he represented, and the City of Paterson. Public Safety was always at the forefront of his mind, particularly Firefighting.
Pascrell was an original members of the Homeland Security Committee, rising to ranking member on the Emergency Preparedness Subcommittee. He authored the bill that created the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
He was instrumental in the protection of Paterson Great Falls National Historic Park.
He secured funding for constructing and improving various NJ roads, bridges, travel corridors and rail expansion between Passaic and Bergen Counties, and NJ highways.
To list all of of legislative and political achievements would be a novel.
Firefighters across the county will always be in debt to Congressman William "Bill" Pascrell Jr., for his years of public service, and his dedication to public safety, especially the fire service.
Rest in peace Bill. You were a role model and hero to the heroes.
